FSC® stands for Forest Stewardship Council, a globally recognized certification system with million hectares of forestland certified under its forest conservation standards.
Forest Stewardship Council is a non-profit organization established in 1993, driven by the mission to promote responsible forestry practices worldwide. The FSC operates through a certification scheme that assesses and labels forest products derived from sustainably managed forests.
FSC uses a voluntary, market-based system in which forests, companies anyway associated to timber related products are audited against principles and criteria of FSC.
FSC ensures traceability of products from the forests to the point of sale. Products that are manufactured from responsibly harvested forests are identified with the FSC logo, which is considered the “gold standard” of forest certification by major environmental groups.
The FSC® Chain of Custody (CoC) enables verification of use of FSC certified material through the production process – from FSC certified forest to the consumer, including all successive stages of processing, transformation, manufacturing, and distribution.
Forest Stewardship Council is a globally acknowledged system that ensures the responsible management of forests and the traceability of products originating from these forests.
FSC Certification is awarded to companies meeting the rigorous standards set by the Forest Stewardship Council for responsible forest management and ensuring the chain of custody for forest-based products. Compliance with these standards encompasses ecological, social, and economic criteria, including wildlife protection, indigenous rights, and the prevention of illegal logging.
Any organization or company involved in the production or trade of forest products can seek FSC Certification. This includes forest owners, logging companies, printers, box manufacturers, furniture manufacturers, retailers, and traders.

A business owner, depending on the company's operation and products, can avail FSC certification to establish forest stewardship by meeting the requirements of the applicable FSC standards. The Forest Stewardship Council offers three types of FSC® certificates:
The FSC® Chain of Custody (CoC) enables verification of use of FSC certified material through the production process – from the forest to the consumer, including all successive stages of processing, transformation, manufacturing, and distribution, using the FSC certification standards - FSC STD 40 004 V3.1 and FSC STD 50 001 V2.1.
FSC Chain of Custody certification can be availed by both traders & manufacturers. Forest products including but not limited to:
Wood Industry - Timber Traders, Sawmills, Furniture Manufacturers, Toy Manufacturers, Flooring, Plywood, Packaging, and many more.
Paper Industry - Paper Mills, Paper Traders, Printing Companies, Packaging Companies, Laminate manufacturers, Label & Tag manufacturers and many more.
Forest Managers or owners who want to prove that their forest operations are socially beneficial and managed in an environmentally appropriate and economically viable manner can apply for forest management (FM) certification.
Commercial plantations, which could range from a few acres (hectares) to thousands of acres (hectares), are owned and managed by individuals, farmers, companies, co-operatives or other such organizations. These plantations, in many cases, have environmental and social problems. FSC certification for plantations initiates improvement in forest management practices and leads to sound environmental practices, socially beneficial and economically viable FSC certified forest and plantation. FSC certification of commercial cultivation like that of teak, eucalyptus, rubber plantations, captive plantations of paper manufacturing companies may lead to a good business case for owners of such plantations.
FSC controlled wood is timber-based forest material that has undergone a formal risk assessment process in line with FSC’s controlled wood standards, and has been found to be at a low risk of not meeting five of the most fundamental FSC principles.
Forest Management companies that comply with the five FSC Controlled Wood criteria will be able to supply FSC Controlled Wood to FSC Chain of Custody operations. FSC Controlled Wood supports the production of FSC Mixed Sources by providing FSC certified companies with tools to control the non-FSC certified wood in their product groups to avoid the wood produced in socially and environmentally most damaging ways.
